Master thesis: Development of a Mobile IEEE 802.11 Analysis Tool Based on Commercial WIFI Chipsets

In a joint project with the German car manufacturer MERCEDES, a mobile WIFI IEEE802.11 analysis tool on the basis of commercial WIFI chipset hardware has to be developed that enables measurements of the WIFI channel on the basis of Channel State Information (CSI). The firmware patch framework NEXMON for Broadcom/Cypress WIFI chipsets shall be used for this purpose. The firmware makes it possible to read the CSI from a BCM4339 WiFi chipset. The channel information shall be integrated into a MATLAB model to simulate in-vehicle channels with respect to the maximum possible gross data rate (with corresponding modulation and coding).

Your Tasks

  • Setup NEXMON firmware: Installation of the NEXMON firmware on a NEXUS 5 or other PC hardware with BCM4339 WIFI chipset; extraction of CSI data for offline analysis and visualization of channel properties.
  • Channel measurements: Carrying out measurements on exemplary scenarios in a MERCEDES vehicle, comparing the results with the reference measurements of the RF signal generator and analyzer.
  • Implementation of MATLAB simulation model: Integration of CSI channel data into a MATLAB IEEE802.11n/ac/ax PHY model; creation of IEEE802.11 OFDM baseband signals, integration of the channel and demodulation of signals to evaluate the bit and packet error rate.
  • Data rate evaluation: Evaluation of the maximum achievable data rate based on the MATLAB simulation with measured channel characteristics; comparison of the results with real throughput measurements with Wifi hardware.
  • Course of studies: Electrical Engineering or Computer Science
  • Knowledge in Communication Theory
  • Experience in MATLAB
  • Knowledge of the PHY and/or MAC layer of the IEEE802.11 standard

Master thesis: Research & Development in Radar Technology

We are looking for support for the following projects in the field of radar technology:

  1. Development of an antenna workbench for radar antennas (77GHz)
    • Literature research on the subject of travelling wave antennas
    • Development MATLAB models to synthesize antennas
    • Full wave simulation of the antennas (with FEKO)
    • Construction and measurement of selected antenna structures
  2. Development of a Doppler generator with adjustable target value (1 to 6GHz)
    • Development of a concept
    • Design of a RF board with mixer, PLL and variable attenuator
    • Design of a µController board to control the PLL and the variable attenuator
    • Construction and validation of the boards using signal generators and spectrum analyzers
  3. Development of a GPU based ray tracer for the simulation of radar raw data
    • Familiarization with the existing Nvidea Ray-Tracing-Tool
    • Development of approaches to improve raw data quality based on MATLAB models
    • Implementation of the MATLAB models in CUDA (OptiX Framework Nvidea)
    • Execution of radar measurements and comparison of simulated and measured raw data
  • Course of studies: Electrical Engineering or Computer Science

For projects with companies from the automotive sector (Audi, BMW, Daimler, Continental, Valeo,…) we are looking for support in the areas of

  • Radar technology (for autonomous driving)
  • Wireless communication systems in a vehicle (for infotainment systems)

Know-how in at least one of the following areas

  • Study of electrical engineering or computer science
  • Knowledge of MATLAB and/or PYTHON
  • Experience in RF measurements (spectrum and network analysis)
  • Microcontroller Programming
  • Analog circuit design
